interning at House of Sunny

week one.

House of Sunny is a up and coming women's tailoring label. The designer Sunny was trained on Savile Row and he has produced his own label, using the skills he has learnt to produce a modern take on women's tailoring making it fresh and exciting.
On my first day I was given the task to edit their logo on photoshop. This took along time as i had to draw triangle in each letter and then cut them out. I was glad i was given a creative task to do though and i like the way it has turned out.
I have also been working on expanding their social media, updating contacts on their books. also reaching out to boutiques and shops showing an interest and making them aware of House and Sunny. House of Sunny has completed their collection and is now in the process of trying to get their garments into shops. So its important that people notice who they are and that they be seen. Social media is a great way of doing this.

week two.

Starting my second week at House of Sunny i felt more relaxed and comfortable in the work environment. One of the tasks i was asked to complete this week, was to simplify their current logo. I did this using Photoshop I played around with the composition and size of the lettering.
I also carried on updating their contact database, this time i was adding celebrity agents and bloggers to their books. This did become a little tedious at times, but i did enjoy looking at the different blogs.

week three.

At the start of the week i was given the task of cutting out images on Photoshop to then layer on a banner for the webpage. I struggled with this, i have always thought that i was fairly good on Photoshop but i clearly still have a lot to learn on it. To help me learn how to cut out around the hair on the model i looked on YouTube watching tutorials i eventually started to understand how to do it. Two previous interns who had worked for House of Sunny came back to work for one day this week. They were both uni students one was american she studied fashion, and the other one studied graphics. When i saw some of the images i had cut out for the website being redone by the one who does graphics i felt a little disappointed, but i have to think she will be using Photoshop all the time within her work. They were both very good at the work they were doing, this made me think that i need to step up my game. As there is so much competition in this industry.

week four.

This was my last week working at House of Sunny, i was quite sad to be leaving as i have enjoyed my time working for the company also the people i was working for/with were all lovely. During this week I was given a few jobs to do one of them was constructing an email for hotels, offering them a bespoke service for their customers. I had to write this letter in the style of House of Sunny, making sure i made the objective of the email clear and securing a meeting. I also had to create a brief email for the official writer at House of Sunny, so she knew what exactly Sunny wanted to be included within her email.
Another job i was given was to contact suppliers around London to see if they had two way zips. This sounds easy enough but no where seemed to do them, i did eventually managed to find somewhere though.
The most tedious job i had to carry out this week was looking for free events in London for Sunny to attend. I just couldn't seem to find any appropriate events for him to socialize at. I tried many different searches, i felt a bit silly how i couldn't find anything but i just reckon there were no fashion events on specially a month after fashion week.
My favorite part of working at House of Sunny was being in a fashion environment, getting to be creative occasionally. Talking about design, style being asked my own opinion about certain looks. I do wish i could of helped with the making as i feel that is an area i need to improve on. However i have been asked to go and help them with their next photo shoot, which i am extremely excited about doing.

Sophie Hayes Project Brief 2013

Start date: 28th January 2013

Hand in date: 7th May 2013

Introduction

I am going to look into fashion how it shapes our culture and our identity. I want to explore how it’s influenced by our music and art, looking at magazines such as Dazed and Confused. Although people don’t like being put into a category and it’s often ‘cool’ to be known as an individual. This is often not the case as music and culture do influence people’s identity and style. I want to look at different music cultures and cities in England to see if they are influenced.

Research and Ideas

By looking at a wide range of research from magazines, online blogs, books, short films, gigs and visiting different cities. I will be able to see the relation of music and art in fashion. How it influences it? Also looking at the culture behind these areas and what identity it gives people. I am also going to look at designers who work closely with artists, presenting them with a strong sense of identity, such as Sarpol for Nicki Minaj. Collecting my own research of photographs and interview’s on street style will help me understand why people dress the way they do. I would like to focus on women’s clothing, looking at a young audience.

Final outcome

·         I aim to design a womenswear collection for A/W 2014, designing six outfits inspired by my research

·         Sketch book of research and designs

·         One garment made chosen from my designs

·         Styled photoshoot of garment

·         Short film

·         Portfolio

Natalie B Coleman tells all on starting up her own label

16th November 2012

So today we had Natalie B Coleman come into uni and present a presentation on her career to date. It was really inspiring how she has created her own label in her home town of Ireland just working out of her garage. I also learnt that making contacts is key in getting your work out there and noticed.
This image is from her collection "All the Jewellery I Never Got" AW11/12
It was nice to hear how her designs were inspired by her own life experiences, "All the Jewellery I Never Got" shows a playful side to all those guys who never put a ring on it. I feel women relate to the fun personal elements of her work.
I had not heard of Natalie B Coleman before today but after seeing her collection and hearing how much hard work she has put into her label, I look forward to seeing what her next collection will be.
